Seven alleged members of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or remain detained.”
